The gateway to success
Jonathan Batiste, an American singer, musician, educator and more, is quoted as saying, "you're never too important to be nice to people". For my thinking, this is one of the most valuable pieces of advice that anyone can be given in their life. Too often people get caught up in their position within an organisation, their title or simply their own self-importance, overlooking the fact, they are still just a person.
Many times in business, I've come across people who for all intents and purposes are simply a cog in a larger machine. Their job is to serve those around them and those they interact with on a daily basis. However, give some of those same people a title and some responsibility and soon rather than working for the betterment of others, they see themselves as someone of note, as someone 'better than'. I always have a little chuckle to myself whenever one of these people treats me or the people I work with badly - in other words disrespectfully. They have no idea about our experiences, our qualifications, our professional standing or our relationships - they just see us as providing a service.
No matter what success I achieve in life, I am completely aware of two ideas:
Success is relative
It doesn't take long for it all to go away
The gateway to success - true success, is to treat everyone you come across in your life with respect, dignity and love. It is the type of treatment that each of us desires and therefore, we should be doing no less to those around us. Whether you are a CEO earning millions of dollars a year, or a cleaner earning minimum wage, you are worth my respect. Who am I to give you anything less?
